It seems like that with the market being so incredibly competitive committee members could look for both perfect publishing and associations with only elite schools. Is that right? What does this mean for people who reduce productivity to have children but then increase it again? Or people who have a less than elite association? Is the market so competitive that R1 jobs are not a possibility for them, even with strong publications?
Obviously there will be a few people who make it even with kids or with a less than perfect record of associations, but I'm wondering if the market is making it so most superstars are decided early and it's very difficult to get on that track later by publishing a lot.
