It was suggested we create a thread on what to negotiate for in start-ups, so I thought I'd start it. We've had some general discussions in other threads, but it would be helpful to hear specific details about what people specifically asked for in their start-ups to ensure when we are doing that step, nothing gets forgotten! Along with things that cost $$, I'd also be interested to hear what people asked for that doesn't cost $$ (e.g., extended use of start-up funds, release from teaching etc).

Thanks jobseeker. Perhaps people can also list details like: 1. how much you were initially offered; 2. how much you ultimately received; 3. type of institution (R1, SLAC, etc.); 4. field (social, cog neuro, etc.). I think this could be incredibly helpful.
Great Thread idea. Here is what I negotiated for:
Summer Salary for Y months
Teaching Load for first year
Paternity Leave off the clock
Other lab based Statistic software
Online experiment software
Tobii Eye Tracker
Data collection PCs
Office and home PCs
Wireless hub ports
Lab based experiment software
Misc Materials and Supplies
Office Phone hookups
Funds for Student Professional Development
Conference Travel for Graduate Students
Online subject Fees
Funds for Bio-marker analysis
Funds to pay teacher participants
Recruitment & stimulus materials
Graduate Student summer support
Full-Time Lab coordinator
My list above is based on a position in Cognitive Psychology (no neuroimaging techniques). One school's initial offer was close to 60k. Another Schools initial offer was close to 230k. Both R1 state schools. Negotiations are ongoing so I can't give a final estimate.
Can we see your list curiousgeorge, neurojobseeker and job seeker.? =)
At the very least post items that some people might overlook.
I don't have a list yet, but I am developing one. I don't have anything much beyond what StuffToNeg has. My list will be different, in that I have a funded project to bring with me, so I'll be adding in things specific to that project (e.g., travel to other site, mileage for graduate students to collect data, extra laptop(s) for data collection). I will not be asking for furniture or lab space, nor software or tech support, since those are provided automatically at my university. A main expense for me will be research coordinator(s), and I need someone quite experienced, so I'm shooting for upwards of $225k.
I don't have a list yet and I'm just starting to think about what would be on my list as I've been interviewing and have more interviews this month (clinical programs) so, fingers crossed, hopefully will get an offer… I do a lot of biological work though, so I will likely have a good chunk of money going to biological specimen collection, storage, and processing.
Is it typical that phone lines / phone hooks ups / technical support are not standard in all departments? Or was there something special you were requesting? Just boogles my mind you'd have to fork over funds to have a phone and to get IT assistance!
I think the furniture/phone lines/space/etc. vary quite a bit. I asked specifically while I was interviewing (mainly because I was desperate to come up with more questions to ask!).
FYI, from last year:
