If a search was canceled because of financial reasons, is it likely that the position will be posted the next year? And I mean the exact same search with the same research area, etc.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I've seen it go both ways. Often the department will want it back next year, but the admin may or may not approve it if they are still having financial woes. Depends on how desperately the dept needs the position. I have heard of visiting positions being opened to temporarily cover such positions as well.
There was a position I was short-listed for that ended up cancelled. It was changed to a VAP gig. Then, during the same academic job search year it was reposted as a TT. I also know of an institution that had a position cancelled for budgetary reasons. The position has not been re-advertised.
Thanks, everyone. I'm sorry to read that, DocJ. A few years back, I had campus interviews at two different schools. Both canceled the positions and changed the focus the following year. It can be very ANNOYING… and after inviting all the candidates for campus interviews.
