Recently I saw a job posting at a school that is very desirable (for both the location and the program). This is for a TT position in a clinical psychology Ph.D. program, and their ad said that the ideal candidate would focus on an area that couldn't be farther from mine. I have heard before that one should just simply apply, since it's not that much work to throw in an extra application. My situation is a little different. I'm pretty content in my current position, and if I apply at all this fall it would be very selectively (which I know will limit my chances significantly). Would it be appropriate in this scenario to email the search chair asking if my area of research would be considered?
