With September comes the "official" start of the 2013-2014 job cycle. Since the majority of comments on this forum seem to be somewhat negative in tone, I thought it would be nice to exude some happy thoughts about this year's market.
First (and definitely foremost)…there are TONS of jobs this year. It seems like the sharp decline in jobs after the recession is finally ramping back up. For those of us applying, it's a great year to be on the market! Plus, most jobs haven't even been posted yet. The crazy high number of good jobs this early in the process is great sign for continued postings down the road.
Because funding is so dire right now if you have a grant, you'll be in great shape. And for those who don't have grants and are on the market (like me) that means when we do get jobs, the funding expectations will certainly not be what they were even only a few years ago.
That is really all. Remember that after short lists have been composted, interview invites comes down to the mysterious "fit" criteria. So don't get discouraged if you aren't invited at an interview for your top choice.
Best wishes everyone. I am certainly eager to see how this fruitful job market plays out.
