Question: How much of a red flag is it if one opts not to use one of their post-doc advisors as a letter writer? The reasons for so doing have more to do with both A) the strength of the other writers who are writing and B) the fact that I did not feel comfortable (due to many factors) of the strength of this persons letters (despite being productive with them in terms of publications).
At the least, if you have a strong record with many publications in top tier outlets, would this immediately throw you into the reject bin? Would not a SC at least give you a chance to explain?
