I was wondering if anybody has done a second clinical postdoc for the purposes of licensure? My current postdoc is having a significant problem with client-flow, and I am concerned that I will not be able to obtain enough direct hours to be licensed. They will likely not extend the placement beyond a year. I am considering applying for another postdoc starting Fall 2014 (although I realize I have missed some deadlines). Does anyone have experience with this? How did you explain the situation in your applications? Thank you.

I would definitely check into the licensure requirements for the states in which you hope to live. I am not familiar with any states that require a certain number of face to face hours. For example, I have colleagues that have done a primarily research post-doc (with clinical emphasis) and they had few face to face hours and were able to get licensed. First, I would verify the number of hours your supervisor is willing to sign off on if you continue at the current case load for the remainder of the fellowship. If the supervisor is okay with this, would you be able to do clinically-related activities (e.g., community presentations, trainings, administrative work) to supplement your hours? I think the next step also depends upon your career goals. If you are looking for an academic position, there are other options you might want to consider for next year (e.g., teaching, research, etc.). Hope that helps.
