I am at a postdoc in Europe and I am mostly applying to jobs in the U.S. How much of a difference does this make in being chosen for campus interviews by U.S. departments? I have had a lot of phone interviews this round, but no campus interviews. It suggests that maybe the unwillingness to pay the extra money to fly me in is a factor. At the very least, I might not be getting campus invites in situations where it is close between myself and other candidates but they are cheaper.
I am a U.S. citizen, so Visa issues aren't in play. Last time I was on the market, when still in the U.S., I got multiple TT offers. And I can't imagine I am doing that much worse in phone interviews than before. There also hasn't been any change in the level of jobs I am applying for. My CV hasn't tailed off significantly in terms of publications and I have a reasonably decent reputation in my current department.
The distance seems to be the most prominent difference between now and before.
